The workers assemble in a church deep in the catacombs. To Freder's astonishment, the service is conducted by Maria, the girl he'd been looking for. She tells the story of the tower of Babel and concludes that mind and hands need a mediator: the heart. The workers, however, are growing impatient and will not wait for much longer. Joh Fredersen, who is spying on the assembly, orders Rotwang to give the man-machine the face of Maria in order to create discord between the workers. But Rotwang suddenly sees something that had escaped Joh Fredersen... the unexpected visitor of the assembly, Joh Fredersen's son.
